Tramp List

The list of tramps that are planned for the next period - up to about six months in advance. Contact the Tramp Leader to book in for the tramp - preferably by the closing date. However late enquiries are considered if there are places still available.

21 August 2010 to 22 Aug 2010 - Blythe Hut / Cascades

The old Blyth track was constructed in the early 1900's with logs across the track through alpine bog. The Blyth Hut (off the main Round-The-Mountain track) and Cascades (rockfall covered with silica deposits from stream) are located on the South (western) slope of Mt. Ruapehu.

Saturday 21 Aug 2010: Departure 7:30 am. Arrival at start Old Blyth track around noon. About 3 hours walk up to Blyth hut past Mangawhero Falls. Volunteer(s) wanted to bring the van up to the next track junction with Mountain Road and 1.5 hours walk to the hut. Overnight in 18-20 bunk hut. We'll take some homemade mulled wine and anybody who wants to bring some snacks and/or other drinks feel free to take some with you, but remember that you'll have to carry it to the hut!

Sunday 22 Aug 2010: Volunteer(s) wanted to walk back to the road and bring the van up to the next track junction with Mountain Road (start track to Cascades/Mangaturu shelter or Turoa lower carpark). Main group walks 2-3 hours up from Blyth Hut along a ridge and across to the lower Turoa carpark and then to the Cascades (3 hours return). On the way back we'll visit the Mangawhero Falls, a Lord of the Rings site, where maybe icicles are to be seen. Back in Hamilton approx 6 pm.

When numbers rise above 10 people, we might want to have somebody drive in their own car with us - this would also eliminate the van moving-around. Any volunteers for that?
