16, 17 September 2006 - Snowcraft

Always a fun weekend (weather permitting) where we can climb mountains and hone up our snowcraft skills.

The annual snowcraft tramps run by the club are more of a fun tramp out in the snow rather than serious alpine training with a focus on seeing some of the landscape under a different mantle.

Dependent on weather we normally leave Hamilton on the Friday evening and stay at Maungatepopo Hut (Tongariro) or some other suitable location. A tramp up Tongariro gives a chance to learn some basic skills and for the more confident, a tramp up Ngaruahoe. Sunday often comprises a tramp up Ruapehu, weather permitting.

Average tramping fitness required plus warm clothing, sleeping bag etc. The tramp is dependent on good weather with a final decision normally made by the Thursday before the tramp.
