28 February 2010 - Hakarimata
We will begin at the Kauri tree walk at the northern end of the Parker Road track, north of Ngaruawhia. We walk past a large kauri grove. This loops around with wide views north to Huntly, the Hakarimata range and the scenic reserve, where 1602 hectares of public land have been set aside. All birds, native animals, plants and geological formations are protected in the reserve. The tops and ridges contain occasional large rimu and rata over abundant tawa and kohekohe, and frequent hinau, rewarewa, mangeao and pukatea, with pockets of miro, Hall's totara and tanekaha. Of special interest are scattered kauri.
We walk right through to the Waingaro Hot Springs Road. Malcolm is moving the van around so he will pick us up at the Southern end of the track. It should take approximately 7 hours with stops for photos and lunch.

30 May 2010 - Two Maori Canoes
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this tramp last time, so we’re going back. It’s located between Paeroa and Thames. Easy bush tramping, several stream crossings, one short wade up stream which could be thigh deep – just depends on how long your legs are! Passing the remains of an old Maori Canoe on the way to the Rat’s Tooth. Rat’s Tooth is optional but well worth the short, almost vertical, climb for fabulous 360 views including Maratoto Rock and Valley.

13 June 2010 - Waihaha River
This is a beautiful area in the Southern portion of Pureora Forest Park. Acesss to the walk begins from State Highway 32, the Western Bypass Road.
The grade is generally easy, with a few short steep sections. Initially we meander through regenerating bush before reaching the edge of the Waihaha Gorge where we see some spectacular ignimbrite rock pools.
At the top of the gorge the track diverts away from the river and climbs over a hill to Pokaiora Clearing - a large heathland covered in tussock, at the far end of the clearing we enter the native forest again for a 20 minute stroll to the hut where we will have lunch and return via the same track. 6 hours return. A good day for beginners, with constantly changing scenery.

27 June 2010 - Kaimais / Kauri Grove
The Waiorongomai Valley is an old gold mining site in the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park. There are many walks following the old mining trails and through the engineering remains. This tramp is up the Waiorongomai Valley and then crossing the stream to do a loop up a spur to a grove of young Kauri trees. It is suitable for beginning trampers - while the day is relatively easy, it will still be interesting.

Bill will take us for a walk over Maungatautari to the Pukeatua side where we will walk to the Out in the Styx Restaurant. There we have the opportunity to have a shower and spa before enjoying a delightful evening meal cooked by our hosts Lance and Mary. Costs: $20 for the van, $5 each for the shower and spa and $45 for the four course meal – including tea and coffee.

25 July 2010 - Wairangamai / Bucks Rock
This area has a huge history in our gold mining past. Many tunnels were built to search that elusive seam and amazing tram lines were built to carry out the rock to the stamper batteries. We will explore all these areas as well as climbing up Buck Rock for great views over the Hauraki Plans – weather permitting. John recalls that Buck Rock is where the racing commentators used to sit with strong binoculars to call the local races!!

21 August 2010 to 22 Aug 2010 - Blythe Hut / Cascades
The old Blyth track was constructed in the early 1900's with logs across the track through alpine bog. The Blyth Hut (off the main Round-The-Mountain track) and Cascades (rockfall covered with silica deposits from stream) are located on the South (western) slope of Mt. Ruapehu.
Saturday 21 Aug 2010: Departure 7:30 am. Arrival at start Old Blyth track around noon. About 3 hours walk up to Blyth hut past Mangawhero Falls. Volunteer(s) wanted to bring the van up to the next track junction with Mountain Road and 1.5 hours walk to the hut. Overnight in 18-20 bunk hut. We'll take some homemade mulled wine and anybody who wants to bring some snacks and/or other drinks feel free to take some with you, but remember that you'll have to carry it to the hut!
Sunday 22 Aug 2010: Volunteer(s) wanted to walk back to the road and bring the van up to the next track junction with Mountain Road (start track to Cascades/Mangaturu shelter or Turoa lower carpark). Main group walks 2-3 hours up from Blyth Hut along a ridge and across to the lower Turoa carpark and then to the Cascades (3 hours return). On the way back we'll visit the Mangawhero Falls, a Lord of the Rings site, where maybe icicles are to be seen. Back in Hamilton approx 6 pm.
When numbers rise above 10 people, we might want to have somebody drive in their own car with us - this would also eliminate the van moving-around. Any volunteers for that?

29 August 2010 - Te Aroha / Tui Mines / Hot pools
This is a good tramp for beginning trampers up to Mount Te Aroha summit via the Tui Mine Track. The summit is the highest point in the Kaimai Mamaku range (952 m), but views from the top can be variable with possible cloud obscuring the panorama. Don't forget your togs and pool entry fee if you want to relax in the hot pools at Te Aroha Domain after the tramp - optional, and the van will wait for those wanting to have a soak!

This is a great day’s tramp in the Central Plateau with stunning views and a variety of scenery. It encompasses desert-like, volcanic and native bush terrain. We begin by crossing the flat south crater followed by a steep climb onto a saddle between Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe to the red crater, the highpoint of 1886 m. From here you will see the most awesome views of the lakes. Then it is down past the Ketetahi hut, through tussock and native bush to the end car park.
